NJSIAA CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES
1973 and prior, there were no playoff games as we know of today. State Titles were decided by the NJSIAA Championship Committee. It wasn't until 1974 that the playoff format was developed to decide on the field, a true champion. From 1974 through 1997, there were four teams that qualified for the playoffs. From 1998 to present, the field comprised
eight teams.

The senior middle linebacker, who J.F. Kennedy coach Rich Nyers said is the “best defensive player I have ever coached,” finished with 121 tackles. Opposing teams tried to run between the tackles against the Mustangs, but opted to test the perimeter because Tenpenny was such a presence inside. In 22 varsity games, Tenpenny registered 247 career tackles. He also excelled as a running back in 2011, rushing 99 times for 572 yards and six touchdowns.

Kennedy traveled to Passaic Valley for their NJSIAA Consolation Game, closing out the 2011 football season. The trip proved to be a positive event for the Mustangs as they turned away the Hornets 37-14. With the win, Kennedy improved their season record to (3-7), while the loss dropped Passaic Valley to (2-8).

ISELIN — Brick’s final regular-season game on Saturday followed the script it had planned for its eight previous matchups: a balanced offense, big plays on special teams and, except for two long runs, a stingy defense.
The result? A 26-13 nondivisional victory over John F. Kennedy that, while satisfying, left the Dragons thinking about what might have been.
“I see us as a playoff team,” Brick coach Rob Dahl said. “I’m proud of our kids. The effort was there all season. We lost a few close games, but we always bounced back. They showed a lot of character.”
Brick (5-4) also showed a killer instinct Saturday, all but putting away the Mustangs (2-6) in the first half. On a day when Kennedy honored its 1971 state championship team, the Dragons stole the show.
On the first play after a Kennedy fumble, Doug Cuccinello burst up the middle for a 12-yard touchdown run with 7:16 left in the first quarter. more
